According to the ASPS, liposuction has ranked among the top cosmetic procedures in recent years. This minimally invasive procedure addresses stubborn pockets of fat to reveal a sleek, slim physique and defined body contours. Although liposuction is minimally intensive, maximizing the healing process is essential. This blog will discuss how to prepare for liposuction and what to expect from recovery so you can plan accordingly and ensure the smoothest recuperation period and best results.

What Is Liposuction?

Many people struggle with fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that targets and eliminates stubborn pockets of fat by suctioning out fat cells. Almost anywhere on the body can be addressed, including the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, chin, and more. According to ASPS, in 2023, liposuction was the most popular plastic surgery procedure for the third year in a row.

Every year, thousands of patients enjoy beautiful results from liposuction procedures. If you’re considering getting liposuction but want to learn more about what recovery entails, you’re in the right place.

How to Prepare for Liposuction Recovery

After your surgery, you may be excited to see your results. However, depending on how much fat was removed, areas of the body operated on, and whether general anesthesia was used, you will likely be sore and tired after your procedure. Therefore, you’ll want to prepare for a smoother recovery in advance. Some things to consider include:

  • Create a recovery zone. Setting this up beforehand will make things much more manageable after surgery. Make sure your bed, recliner, or sofa is prepped with plenty of pillows and blankets. Have a show, list of movies, or books at the ready to keep you entertained. And keep essentials nearby, like lip balm, tissues, and a no-spill water bottle.
  • Enlist a friend, family member, or care companion for help. You’ll need help with meals and medication management, especially post-anesthesia. You may also need help around the house or with children or pets.
  • Meal prep. Stocking up on groceries that are easy to prepare or bulk-preparing and freezing meals you can simply reheat will be a significant help. A meal delivery service is another excellent option to make things easier for you.

Having a general plan for your first week after surgery will make things much easier for you, so you can focus on healing.

Liposuction Recovery Timeline

Everyone heals at their own pace, and how quickly you heal will also depend on the details of your procedure (where, how much fat, et cetera). However, a general timeline for liposuction recovery goes as follows:

  • Week One: Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are at their worst. Focus on rest. Use compression garments.
  • Week Two: Most patients start to feel better. At this point, you may be ready to return to work but limit physical activity. Short walks help blood flow and healing.
  • Weeks Four to Five: Most bruising and swelling should be gone. Continue using compression garments for the best results.
  • Week Six and Beyond: You may fully return to normal activities and exercise when your surgeon clears you.

Liposuction Recovery Tips

If you’d like to speed up the recovery process after liposuction and ensure you get the best results, there are a few things you can do:

  • Follow post-operative instructions carefully, and be sure to keep all follow-up appointments to avoid complications. Call your surgeon if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Use compression garments. These minimize swelling and help your new body contours take shape.
  • Get plenty of rest. Get at least seven hours of sleep per night, and take naps when needed.
  • Engage in light exercise. Short walks around your room during the first week help to prevent blood clots. As you feel better, you can take slightly longer, but still gentle, walks outside.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol. Smoking impairs circulation and can lead to tissue necrosis. Alcohol increases your risk of bleeding. Both significantly hinder your body’s ability to heal, so avoid them during your recovery.
  • Get lymphatic drainage massages. Manual lymphatic drainage has many benefits for post-surgery patients. It helps reduce swelling, accelerates healing, improves skin elasticity and body contours, and is relaxing.
