If you dream about starting a family someday but also dream about changing the size or shape of your breasts, you probably have concerns about how implants could affect your future plans.

Fortunately, since breast augmentation is a common plastic surgery procedure, there is a lot of information available for women who have or want breast implants and also want to become pregnant someday.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting (With Implants)

Pregnancy causes many hormonal changes throughout a woman’s body. These hormones can change the shape, size, and even the texture of the breasts. If you have implants or are thinking about getting them, it’s only natural that you would wonder how these hormonal changes might affect you.

The basic answer is that your implants themselves will be just fine. Implants are resilient and are designed to deal with the pressure caused by growing breast tissue. Even as your breasts naturally change size and shape during your pregnancy, your implants are unlikely to lose their shape.

Should I Get My Implants Before or After Baby?

If you are interested in having a breast augmentation procedure, it’s fine to pursue it before or after pregnancy.

If you want a family in the future but don’t have any immediate plans to become pregnant, there’s no reason for you to delay. If you are considering getting pregnant soon, you should generally wait until you are fully healed after having your implants done before pursuing pregnancy. Fortunately, this only takes around six to eight weeks, making it easy to plan around it.

Since pregnancy can affect and stretch the breast tissue, some women choose to postpone their breast surgery if they feel a pregnancy is in the near future. This will allow your surgeon to address any changes to the breast tissue/skin following childbirth.

Can I Breastfeed With My Implants?

While breastfeeding can be great for both mother and baby, it can also be challenging. Fortunately, women who have had breast augmentation shouldn’t experience any extra problems due to their implants.

In most up-to-date procedures, implants are placed under the breast tissue through an incision beneath the breast. This type of surgery should not impact the areas where milk ducts develop.

If you wish to breastfeed after breast augmentation, please discuss this with Dr. Boll so she can plan your surgery accordingly. While there is never a guarantee that there will be no problems breastfeeding, many women with implants can do so without concern.

Post-Baby Procedures to Help You Look Your Best

Sometimes women lose breast volume due to pregnancy or wind up with asymmetrical breasts after breastfeeding.

Breast augmentation enhances the breasts for postpartum women who feel that their breasts look deflated or are too disproportionate for their liking. You may also consider a breast lift, which removes excess skin and tightens up surrounding tissues to give you a more uplifted breast profile.

For those who have implants already, breast revision surgery is another post-pregnancy option if you want to change the size or position of your implants. You can even combine these procedures.
